potential literal music videos

I think this could easily be a good literal music video as the tune of the song is quite repetitive and easy to change, there isnt much going on in the video either and therefore it is easy to change the lyrics.

Literal music videos

I think the reason why i find this music video funny partly is due to the fact that the catchy tune is still there but the lyrics have completely changed, i can still tell that this was Total Eclipse of the Heart, clearly. The lyrics that reference social groups also make the video humorous, for example when the emo kids are referenced it made me laugh. The fact also that the lyrics are completely stating exactly what is being acted out makes the video funny as well, this is because us as an audience aren't use to this.

Lip Sync Exercise

The purpose of the lip sync exercise is to prepare us for next year for the music video. The song that we chose to lip sync was Shake It Off by Taylor Swift, this made the exercise funny as this isn't the sought of music that our group listen to. To prepare for the exercise we were told to lean the lyrics over the weekend, this wasn't a hard task though because the whole song is quite easy to remember. In the studio we split up into three groups of seven and there were three different stages in the studio, one of the stages was a camera set up on a dolly, at this stage we moved the camera along the track. At the second stage there was a sofa and a camera which was in a fixed position focused on the sofa. I learnt a lot from the experience including the fact that you film with the music going on in the background, this sounds like a stupid statement but i had never thought about it before, therefore i learnt how to lip sync. I also learnt that to tape the position of the actor is vital when filming the video.
In the suite we split our groups in half, which ended up meaning that there was three people per computer, this was good as it allowed everyone to get involved in the editing process. Just like editing the Thrillers we put the clips into rushes and bins. Then we got all the clips that we wanted and timed them with the music by looking at the beats of the music and the music in the background of the video, this made it really easy after the music had been synced with the clip, but it took some time to do so. I learnt that editing music videos is harder than editing thrillers because of the fact that the music and the video has to be timed perfectly together otherwise the finished product is going to be as good as can be.

We did make some mistakes on the day, for example our acting skills were not the best, but this was due to the fact that we wanted everyone to act and not everyone were actors. Another mistake on the day was that in the dolly section of the studio our pushes for the dolly moved the camera either too slowly or too quickly, this can be fixed by more experience on the dolly though.

Wix VS Wordpress

I learnt how to use Wix yesterday, i also tried to learn how to use Wordpress the day before, unfortunately Word Press wasn't for me, but i really liked using Wix.
The reason why i did not enjoy using Wordpress because it was all so confusing, for example i only found out that at the end of the end of the lesson that i was doing the homepage on completely the wrong thing. I was doing the homepage on blog rather than on pages, this wasn't due to a lack of listening either, it was because it was not made clear where the pages bit was on the website by the Wordpress themselves. So i didn't actually get round to making a Wordpress page in the lesson.

.

I found using Wix so much easier because of the fact that you could just drop and drag things on the page made designing the actual page really simple. There were also lots of cool templates on Wix as well.
The pictures below are screenshots of my homepage of The Kooks, i manage to produce this homepage within about 30 minutes, in this time i learnt how to use the software as well. This shows how quick and easy it is.

narrative structure

  •     Illustration:  this is where the video tells the story of the lyric.  Dance is often used to express the feelings/moods in the song. Madonna, Like A Prayer is an example
  •     Amplification: The images amplify the lyrics as a narrative may be used to convey a deeper meaning that would not be picked up from the lyrics alone. The artist(s) may take on fictional roles within the narrative. Lady Gaga Judas is a example
  • Disjuncture: this is where there is little connection between the lyric and video or where the video contradicts the lyric.  Michael Jackson’s Man in the Mirror is an example of this.  The song is about individual self-realisation but the video is full of people acting together to bring about world change.

The videos we will analyse all contain aspects of an illustrative narrative

The first video, is:

Rudimental - Not Giving In ft. John Newman & Alex Clare

We chose to use this video as we feel that with the use of the lyrics, coinciding with the video, gives a very strong narrative.

The video is basically about two boys living in poverty, and have tough family backgrounds are trying to find ways to get out of them. Both of them start of stealing, for monetary gain, however through the course of the video their paths change. One of the boys uses illegitimate means to feel self worth/ gain financially and turns to crime and joins a gang. Where as the other boy turns to dance and learns how to dance, and from what it seem enters a competition. The result is that the gang boy gets shot and evidently "gives in", but the other boy gets back up from his fall, thus "doesn's give in"
This video is also good as it highlights problems that we do experience in todays society, in places such as where this was filmed- Shanty towns in Manilla- The Phillipines
The lyrics have heavy support with the video:

Well, it's time to start the show,
Lost my heart and lost my soul.
Now it's the time that you won't know,
Lost my mind and lost my goal.

Mm, not giving in.
I'm not giving in,
Not giving in,
Ooh I'm not giving in, yeah.

This time, I'm gonna be stronger I'm not giving in,
This time, I'm gonna be stronger, no, I'm not giving in.

Waste my time which makes things worse,
Lost in mine, my love is cursed.
Mm, time to make these things feel right,
Mmm, let's start this show for one last time.

Oh, I'm not giving in,
(Not giving in)
Not giving in,
(Not giving in)
Let me tell you no, not giving in,
Not this time,
(Not giving in)
Not gonna give it in.

This time, I'm gonna be stronger I'm not giving in,
This time, I'm gonna be stronger, no, I'm not giving in.

Nooo, not giving in.
Not giving in
(This time, I'm gonna be stronger I'm not giving in)
I'm gonna be stronger
(This time, I'm gonna be stronger I'm not giving in)
I'm gonna be stronger

This time, I'm gonna be stronger I'm not giving in,
This time, I'm gonna be stronger I'm not giving in.
This time, I'm gonna be stronger I'm not giving in,
This time, I'm gonna be stronger I'm not giving in.
This time, I'm gonna be stronger I'm not giving in,
This time, I'm gonna be stronger I'm not giving in.
Wooh
This time, I'm gonna be stronger I'm not giving in.
This time, I'm gonna be stronger I'm not giving in.
Not giving in
Not giving in.

Then you can then compare it to-

Sam Smith - Lay Me Down

This video uses the images to amplify the lyrics, and due to this we get a much deeper meaning into what the video actually means.

They've chosen to make a statement and showcase something that the director and artist would passionately believe in. We are shown through the video, Sams dreams, being that one day gay men and lesbian and woman all over the world will be able to be accepted in todays society. The video starts of depressing, with what looks like a funeral in the church, then changes scene to him moving to the back on the church, and all costume changes from black to white and the lighting changes from dark to bright, highlighting a change in mood, turns from a negative scene to one of joy.

The lyrics, support the emotions and feeling throughout the video, and help the audience to pick out the deeper meanings from the images:

Yes, I do, I believe
That one day I will be
Where I was right there
Right next to you

And it's hard
The days just seem so dark
The moon, the stars
Are nothing without you

Your touch, your skin
Where do I begin?
No words can explain
The way I'm missing you

Deny this emptiness
This hole that I'm inside
These tears
They tell their own story

Told me not to cry when you were gone
But the feeling's overwhelming, it's much too strong

Can I lay by your side?
Next to you, you
And make sure you're alright
I'll take care of you
I don't want to be here if I can't be with you tonight

I'm reaching out to you
Can you hear my call?
This hurt that I've been through
I'm missing you, missing you like crazy

[This verse only at album version:]
You told me not to cry when you were gone
But the feeling's overwhelming, it's much too strong

Can I lay by your side?
Next to you, you
And make sure you're alright
I'll take care of you
I don't want to be here if I can't be with you tonight

Lay me down tonight
Lay me by your side
Lay me down tonight
Lay me by your side
Can I lay by your side?
Next to you
You

I have chosen Radioactive to represent disjuncture. This is because the lyrics are about someone waking up from an apocalypse and how the world has changed from this apocalypse. Therefore you would imagine the narrative of the music video to be somewhere along the lines of someone waking up in a city with scratches and scars on their face and buildings and infrastructure to be destroyed and for their to be images of dying people. This is not what we get though. The narrative of the music video involves toys fighting each other and people gambling over them, the people appear to be enjoying themselves and having a good time even though there is suppose to be an apocalypse

Whoa, oh, oh
Whoa, oh, oh
Whoa, oh, oh
Whoa
I'm waking up to ash and dust
I wipe my brow and I sweat my rust
I'm breathing in the chemicals
(inhale) (exhale)
I'm breaking in, shaping up, then checking out on the prison bus
This is it, the apocalypse
Whoa
I'm waking up, I feel it in my bones
Enough to make my systems blow
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, oh, I'm radioactive, radioactive
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, oh, I'm radioactive, radioactive
I raise my flags, don my clothes
It's a revolution, I suppose
We're painted red to fit right in
Whoa
I'm breaking in, shaping up, then checking out on the prison bus
This is it, the apocalypse
Whoa
I'm waking up, I feel it in my bones
Enough to make my systems blow
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, oh, I'm radioactive, radioactive
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, oh, I'm radioactive, radioactive
All systems go, the sun hasn't died
Deep in my bones, straight from inside
I'm waking up, I feel it in my bones
Enough to make my systems blow
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Welcome to the new age, to the new age
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, oh, I'm radioactive, radioactive
Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh, whoa, oh, oh, oh, I'm radioactive, radioactive

Organic Album cover

I have had a look at Adel's album Adele 21, Adele is a good example of an organic singer song writer. She is a singer song writer that doesn't include any instruments.
Adele in her album cover Adele 21 appears as is presented to be dark and shady, this is because the lighting of the picture is dark and mysterious, there is quite a lot of Adele's face in shadow as well to expand on the point about mystery and dark. Adele has been made to look attractive in the album cover from the use of her make up artists, however she isn't over sexualised which makes her seem more innocent to the audience. Adele's star image appears to be thoughtful and deep this is because her eyes are closed in the album cover.

Madonna Textual Analysis

The music video opens with a woman running away from something with sirens in the background which is a negative connotation, we then see a door shut, which implies that something or someone is being shut out, it cuts to a burning crucifix, which is commonly associated with the Klu Klux Klan, there are then quick cuts to what looks like a woman being beaten by 3 men and one man turns around and gives a menacing look, implying that whoever he is looking at will be next, it then cuts to a church which is a positive as it is holy ground and it then cuts to a black man being led away while in the spotlight with a shamed expression on his face, Madonna then shuts the door and we see a POV of the church, we then see Madonna  on her knees praying, which is usually for forgiveness which connotes that she has done something wrong, it then cuts to a crucifix with Jesus  on the wall in gold which represents the church is a positive way, we then see a figure which looks like the man that was being led away by the police in a wax figure and it looks like he is crying, it is supposed to be Jesus, this was controversial because in the music video he is portrayed as being black whereas normally Jesus is portrayed as a white man. We then see the wax figure start to move and we also see a tear fall down his cheek, which is an occurrence in religious phenomenon, Madonna then approaches the cage and starts singing to the Jesus lookalike, she is on her knees giving off the impression that the church and the wax figure are in power over Madonna. We then see that she enters a dream and she is in the clouds and falling, which could possibly represent that she has done something wrong because she is falling from heaven. She is then caught by an African- American woman, she then kisses the wax figures feet and opens the cage, which could be seen as a metaphor for the majority of African-Americans in prison, the figure then gets out the cage and comes alive and gives Madonna a kiss on the cheek and on the forehead, which implies that she has been forgiven, he then leaves the church and Madonna picks up a knife and then cuts herself but as she looks at her hands she has holes which are similar to those of Jesus on the cross, this is controversial because this is another religious phenomenon and it is consider that it only happens to a chosen few, then a choir joins In with singing along to the song, it then cuts to Madonna being on the street and we see a woman being attacked by 3 men, we then see that the look the man gives to the person we can’t see is in fact Madonna and she stands there and does nothing while an African-American man comes running down the stairs to aid the woman, we then see the African-american man run to aid the woman while the attackers have run away and the spotlight is put on him and the police pull up, this represents the man as being a criminal while the white men get away with it, representing all black males as criminals, we then see Madonna singing in front of 4 burning crucifixes which is associated with the KKK, who hate anyone who is ethnically different to them, we then cut back to the church where a small black boy encourages Madonna to join in with the choir, it is also very controversial because of what Madonna is wearing in the church as she is wearing a very small dress with cleavage showing, another controversial talking point is that she kisses Jesus, we then see the wax figure mould back into his place inside the cage, it then cuts to Madonna at the police station providing evidence for the black male who was wrongly caught killing the woman, she then goes up to the cage like she does in the church which is almost saying that jesus was a normal person and this is another thing that will anger religious fanatics and followers

SEXUALISATION OF MADONNA

Negus Organic and Synthetic Artists

Ed Sheeran is a good example of a organic artist. A organic artist is someone who doesn't have a seperaste image on stage to what they are like in real life. for example they would turn up to an audition and the producers and the make up artists wouldnt change much about the artist they would keep the image the same. In Ed Sheeran's case the producers and designers would just buy Ed Sheeran lots and lots of hoodies, this is his normal clothing and therefore not much has changed about him since he became an artist. This is what  makes him an Organic artist.

This was Ed Sheeran before he became famous, he is wearing a hoodie and is playing the guitar, just like what he is doing now. This shows that he really hasnt changed much.

Justin Bieber is a example of a synthetic artist. A synthetic artist is one that has an image that is seen by the public but they arent the same behind the eye of the public. Justin Biebers image when he was performing was a young cute boy who was innocent. At first Justin Bieber's attempt to achieve this was successful. But what makes Justin a synthetic artist is the fact that behind his image of being a cute singer he is seen to be a trouble maker.
