Focus Group

A focus group is when you get a collection of people together to discuss about something in particular. The purpose of a focus group is to get feedback from a neutral point of view. In preparation to the focus group we had to get the final cut of the video ready, the existing website and the existing digipack.
When it came to running the focus group we were (4 of us) were in a classroom with a media class in the year below us with their teacher and we asked them questions on our products that we have created. When asking the questions we were advised to ask them in a different way to get the best and most effective response to help us improve, these questions were
What do you think about the digipak?
What do you think this band is like?
What words you pick to describe this band based on the digipak?
The reason why we are supposed to asking questions like this compared to asking what people like about the website or the digipack is because in this case if they don't like anything then they will say so, we can then learn from the feedback and look on improving the products. Whereas if we just ask what the focus group like about the products we wont find out if there is anything they don't like. We recorded our findings from the focus group with a voice recorder, this was effective because not only does it let us look back on the focus group and see the exact feedback we got from the group, but we managed to do it discretely because its not like we had a big camera in the individuals faces which would likely effect what the individual was going to say. We had a phone on the table which hardly anyone noticed.

The key findings we got from the focus group were

  • Too much space on the home page
  • The products on the store page needed to be added- we showed them the products that would be added and they said that the products needed to be neater
  • The lion needed to be clearer
  • The digi pack and the website needed to be linked together better

Website before focus group

After the focus group

As you can see from the video before the focus group compared to the video of the website after the focus group we have changed a few bits around mainly because of the feedback we got in the focus group.
For example:
That empty space on the home page has now gone
The products have been added
And the lion picture is clearer
The focus group really helped us to develop the website and digi pack from the advice given to us.

update on the website

I spoke to Phil on Friday about the website and he was basically telling me that we are not gonna go very far with the website if we are just making it up on the spot, we should look at other websites for inspiration. This really annoyed me at first as we spent quite a lot of time on the website, but then i realised that we really hadn't gone very far with it at all so i took Phil's advice and started to look at some other websites for inspiration.

Looking at these two websites is what has given me the inspiration. I think the simple look is the best for us.

feed back on website

From the feedback to the video, the main area that appeared to come up the most was the background photo for the pages, this is still a working progress for us however. But we are looking for a abstract photo, so we do know what we are looking for which is good. Mainly the advice that we got was to make the gallery slide on the home page fit the home page better and put it below the top half of the page so that people dont see the top of the gallery when opening up onto the home page which looks scruffy.

Website photo's

Today i tried to organise a photo shoot but unfortunately only 1 of the band members turned up. But instead of calling the photo shoot off i thought we might as well just have some single shots. Luckily Angel, a friend of mine is a photographer and so i asked him if he would take the photos if i told him what i wanted. We took some photos of Giorgio up against a big white sheet with lights on him, the reason for putting him in front of the white photos means that we can change the backgrounds effectively, as shown in the photos. Obviously we need some band photos as well but at least i have some photos to put up on the website and some photos for Perry to put on the digi pack if he needs them. For the main background of the homepage we are going for urban look, for example buildings, this is because it fits the genre of our music.

For these photos Angel used photoshop to transfer the image onto other images that he has taken, the fact that Angel had the background photos taken already means that the quality of the photos are much better as they haven't been altered with on the internet. I prefer the photo with the graffiti on the wall to the simple black wall, this is because it is more visually appealing.

Using Wix

To start with i struggled using Wix to make the website, this is because i havent ever used it before and therefore took some time getting used to. However once i watched a few YouTube videos and played around with the software my self i found it very straight forward, from what i have heard it is not as professional as Word Press, this doesnt bother me as the website that we need to make that from the research of other alternative rock bands show that the website should just be a simple one. The process of making the website has been quite long so far and the website still doesnt look quite right, this is because we still dont have homepage for it yet so all the information that has gone in to the homepage is supposed to support the homepage picture it self not some template picture. The image we are looking for is a urban one. I think once we have the right homepage image the process will be much quicker.
I have organised few photo shoots but unfortunately no one has shown up which is quite annoying considering that we dont have much time left to complete the website and the digi pack

possibilities for website idea

http://www.bastillebastille.com/home/#url=%23
Looking at Batille's website has given me inspiration for how i want to design our website. The main feature of Batille's website is the dissolving revolving picture. This is what catches the audiences eye straight away. For our Website i wanna do the same thing with a dissolving revolving picture where each member walks into the frame after each other, so one person will walk into the frame and then a second person will walk in then the third. To do this we will just take a shot of a cool back round that i have yet to find, and then take a shot of all 3 members then two members then 1 member then nothing just the background.
Here you can see that the main feature is the picture and the Band Name. Unfortunately you can't see the revolving dissolving pictures because it is a still shot that i have uploaded.

In the research we did as a group looking at websites of alternative american rock bands we found that most of the websites the main feature was the picture and the band name, this supports the website that i wanna do which is important because we should follow the conventions of the music genre to help make it look more realistic

Media shoot day

Tuesday 17 November 2015

last minute preparations

In the lesson we have done some last minute preparations for the big day tomorrow (shoot day), we have done a list of what props we need to bring with us tomorrow so we can tick them off the sheet after we load them into the van. We might do another rehearsal this afternoon but our band is definitely ready for the shoot, having spoken to Max earlier he is definitely ready, i made him sing the lyrics of the song to me and he got them all right. I need to remind Giorgio and Thomas that they need to bring in a selection of clothes including black jeans black shoes black tee shirt and white tee shirt.

Tuesday 10 November 2015

Rehearsal

Today we had a rehearsal and for the first time everyone showed up. The rehearsal went very well, Max our singer has learnt his words and looks very confident on camera, Thomas our drummer even said at one point that he didn't need to rehears because it was too easy which was good to hear in a way but also annoying in a way because he might find it easy but the others might need some more practice and we need all the band to be there. Our guitarist Giorgio looked like he picked up the song and new exactly what he was doing which was good to see, the only problem was that he didn't have a strap for his guitar so he couldn't stand up and play, but i said could he make sure that he brings one tomorrow so we can see the band in proper action.

learning from music video

yesterday i was in a music video along with the people in my class for Phil's other class, the music video took place in a pub near school. The music video was made to look like a live performance in the pub, it consisted of two themes which were winter and summer. It was very helpful for our group as we got to see how the day runs. It taught me that we need to have a piece of paper to take with us with a brief description of each shot we need, this is because the music video yesterday was rushed a little bit because of timings, therefore if we have the exact shots that we need written down we can speed up the process and we wont have any faffing about, we can just get it done quickly and smoothly. Yesterday also taught me the significance of rehearsing the band, this is because the group members yesterday had issues with their lead singer and how he wasn't what they imagined him to be like on camera, because of this we are having a quick rehearsal today at lunch with our band to help them come together and feel comfortable performing.

Another rehearsal failure

Today we tried to have another rehearsal, we thought that everybody was free and 2 out of the 3 of them were. It was our guitarist who had a lesson on in the afternoon at the time that worked for everyone so we decided to scrap it because we need all of them to be there to help them become more of a band. This is the second time this has happened, the people that we have got have yet had a rehearsal together, this needs to be sorted out and i am going to take control of this as Freddie isn't. What i have learnt from this is that emailing them isn't going to work so i am going to find them individually and check when they can do it and when they cant, hopefully all of them will have time during the day for a quick 15 minute rehearsal.

Introduction to the second half of term

Today we started the lesson by talking about what we are going to be doing in the next seven weeks, this included finishing the pre production of our music video, our shoot day post production and an introduction to the theory of the lesson.
We were then told to make a list of the things that needed to be done as a group by the end of the week, i got a specific email from Phil our teacher saying that somebody needed to step up and take lead of sorting this out and suggested that i should, so in response to this i took control over who was going to do what in the lesson and in the upcoming week. I gave the stuff that we needed to do to the members of our group that i thought would do it the best and would actually do it, for example i gave Freddie the responsibility of organising a rehearsal for the band as i new that he was closest to the band members and i gave Alex the responsibility of sorting the props out exactly because he knows more then any of us what the video is going to actually look like and then i asked Perry to try and get the props that we need that the school have in the Drama department.

Rehearsal

Today we tried to have a rehearsal in the studio at school, unfortunately this wasn't great as 2 out of the three of our band turned up

Tuesday 20 October 2015

Talking to the set designer

Today in the lesson we spoke to the set designer Jacqueline and to the lighting guy Jack. We showed them how we would like the set to look like in the studio. They understood clearly what the theme of the set should be like, we are going for a sort of grungy basement sort of set with pipes on the wall behind the band, Jacqueline said that this could be done, but she was wondering whether this would actually be on the set or would it be done by green screen, we hadn't really thought that out but we concluded that it should be already on the set to make it seem more realistic. There is a problem with this however because there is another group in the year that want this type of set, so we need to sort of make it look a bit different otherwise it will look like we have copied them and put no effort into the design. Talking to Jacqueline has helped me realise that the set is going to look really good due to the fact that we have a real set designer to help us with it. We would struggle on our own to create the set because none of us do art or design.
Jack the lighting guy said that doing the spotlights for the band would be easy but there are two different types of spotlights that we could have, we could either have a really strong one where the audience can identify clearly that the individual band members are being spotlighted, or we could have a weaker spotlight that comes of more natural. We didn't really know which one would be best so we asked for his advice and he said that the more natural spotlight would be better as it fits better with the theme of the video.
For the police lighting he said that if we got an actual police light it wouldn't show up very well because it is quite small, he suggested that we use actual blue and red lighting to show it, we didn't really understand how this would be done because we don't really understand how lighting works, so he said that he would be able to do it pretty easily and that we don't have to worry about it. This is nice for us as it allows us to leave it to an expert and not have to worry about it, which allows us to focus on other things.

Monday 19 October 2015

Monday the 19th of october

In todays lesson we put the final props that we require for the music video together and went through who was gonna get which prop and what props we could get off school, there were quite a lot of props that we need that the school have. This process took quite a lot of time and taught me that you need a lot of props to make what you are trying to pull of realistic. After we got the props together we decided to get the costume together, this was initially set out for Perry to do but he struggled with the task as he didn't really understand the image that we wanted so i helped him out by looking at Alternative American rock bands on the internet. This i thought was quite an easy process to do because it is all online, you just have to know what the image is that you want.  We have decided to either go with all black or a chequered shirt.
The ending for the music video hasn't been decided so today we looked at the possibilities for it. I am not to sure on the ideas though so i am going to try and come up with some other ones to give ideas to the group. I am going to try and do this by listening to the lyrics of the song and imagining what would work well. By looking at a variety of music videos i have learnt that a good ending to the music video isn't vital so if we could come up with a simple one i think it would be alright.

Alex also started to draw out the shot list for the video but we haven't gone very far with it but he is finishing it over night hopefully.

Talking to Luke

In yesterdays lesson we spoke to Luke about the small narrative to the video, this is about the security guards and he did like it initially but came up with a better idea for us. He told us that a band playing in a car park seems to portray breaking of the rules in a away and therefore we should have some blue flashing lights and police car syrons to build suspension of the band playing on the roof of the car park. I was happy with the idea of the security guards to be honest but he obviously knows more about music videos as he has been doing them for the last 20 years so i am happy to change the narrative a little bit. It is frustrating for us as a group as we think we have come up with good ideas and just as we are finalising them we are told than we can do better.

This is what i thought that Luke mean about the flashing lights and the siren.

Thursday 15 October 2015

Thursday the 15th of October

In todays lesson as a group we gave each other tasks to do. I was told to do the prop list and help Freddie out with the cast list. This was quite an easy task to do because i had the props imagined in my head and so i just went through the video in my head and thought what we needed and when. I had to also divide up the props that we as a group would get and the props that we needed to either borrow off the school. Most of the props that we need the school have so we just need to ask to borrow them. The only props that we actually need to get is a sandwich and maybe a torch light and a walkie talkie.

Test shoot + Rehearsals

Today we had both our test shoot and a rehearsal all in one, the reason we did this was because we are running out of time a little bit and thought it would be best to do tasks in one go. I thought that it went really well and when the band were all there together they worked well together. The photo beneath is the band minus the drummer Tom, but Tom is in the video. I think that Max is giving off the right image for our lead singer,  and our guitarist Thomas could be playing any instrument on stage as he has got the look for it all. I am very pleased that we have finally got this done as it has taken a long 3 weeks to come up with this final idea and i think the real thing is going to be amazing. I think the reason why the band look good together is because there hair styles are quite similar, they have all got quite long hair that flops around, this fits with the tone of the song which is quite grungy. They might not be creating this sort of vibe when they are off camera. They are all confident on camera which makes it much easier for us to film because they know what they need to do. I really hope that we can have all three of them in our final piece.

Polydor Records talk

The talk we had from Polydor Records was by two employees of the business. There jobs within Polydor were video commissioners, there main purpose was to make sure after an idea was brought out that everyone was on the same page of the idea. They work with different directors who all have different ideas for music videos, ranging from narrative music videos to performance videos and animated videos. They said that they liked to work with new directors who are willing to take risks, this is because the ones who take risks generally come up with the better ideas.

The talk today from Polydor records has taught me a few things when making music videos.
The treatment to the music video should be short and sweat and also visually impressive, this is because if the treatment is just text than its going to bore the person you are pitching it to, you wanna give the best impression possible on the idea.
They also said that the best ideas in a way are the simplest ones, this i was happy about because our group has had lots of ideas in the last 3 weeks that were all quite complicated and our new idea is very simple

Tuesday 13 October 2015

Order of events in the car park:

  • band carrying instruments into car park
  • stumbles upon guard, who thinks nothing of it
  • goes onto the roof, sets up instruments, starts playing
  • guard on duty starts to hear noise, follows sound
  • finds amp lead, follows it
  • finds band playing on roof, playing it to the world
  • Goes to small band member orders him to stop, big band member then intimidates guard and tells him to go away
  • retreats, calls in backup with walkies talkie
  • sees colleges doing clean habits e.g doing tie up, drinking cup of tea, looking at the cctv casually
  • they go up to roof
  • start listening to music, 'let their hair down'
  • Each band member is individually dragged away - guitarist dragged while still playing and pianist too, and are taken away. We don't see where
  • Drummer is taken away, and his drum sticks maybe broken in front of him?
  • Singer is left alone, still singing, then dragged away and thrown off the roof of the car park.

Monday 12 October 2015

Finalising the idea

In todays lesson we were trying to think of ways to make the video look more visually appealing. I came up with an idea that seems to of pleased Freddie and Alex but i don't think Perry is too keen on it but seems to be ok with it as its about the group not individual ideas. The idea of the video is set in a location which is on the roof of a car park and in a studio. In the studio there will be a band and to make things look interesting the band members are going to be on different levels for example one member will be on the floor and then another will be on a block higher up and another will be higher up than that and as the song goes on they will alternate positions. There will also be projections on the wall of a jungle, this is significant as the main lyrics to the song are 'into the jungle'. The car park scene is about the band setting up to play when a security guard comes and stops them but the band pays no attention to the security guard so he has to cool back up and eventually the security guards all end up enjoying themselves, this is shown by them dancing around with each other.
This is what i can imagine the security guard and car park looking like in my head. The security guard needs to be quite big and look quite old. He needs to have a security jacket on and have a walkie talkie

Looking at other performances

As a group we got 3 ideas of band sets that we liked each, the one that i liked the most was my own and this was one with flashing lights going off in the background. I think i liked this the most because it looks quite easy to do, for example it can probably be done in after affects, it also looks visually interesting; I spoke to the group and they thought that this could be done, another element to the performance that i liked was by Green Day and its on my blog, they made the performance visually appealing because the guitarist was moving around the set and jumping up in the air. Another element o the performance was there was like an explosion of paint.

Wednesday 7 October 2015

Back to Basics

we had a bit of a problem today, as a group and from the feedback from Phil and Luke we have decided that the smashing stuff up (narrative of our music video) isn't going to work. This has lead us to the option of just doing a performance.

This was the lesson plan for us

These are examples of different things to make the performance more exciting

Finishing off with Luke

Luke said that the song that we have chosen (Sail) is too well known and the fact that it has a music video makes it harder for us because we have to try and compete with that music video which we cant do because if you compare the budgets, they are too different. The song we have chosen as a back up is

X Ambassadors, Jamie N Commons - Jungle

The reason for this is because it has the same meaning to Sail, this is good for us because it means that we don't have to change anything else of the video.

Monday 5 October 2015

Filling in the time line that Alex started

Another Pitch to Luke

We pitched what we thought our final idea was to Luke who understood the concept of the idea about it being in reverse and he loved the song. The criticisms he did have was that for the smashing up scenes he thought they wouldn't last very long, this means that we would have to have loads of things in a room to smash up, because A, it wont look like a room without lots of stuff in and B. because otherwise we wont have enough visual image in the video to fill out the 3 minutes 15 seconds. Phil also said that we didn't have to make the narrative interesting and didn't have to worry about linking it up.

Luke made us have a look in the studio to see if there would be enough space for 4 back up dancers and a main singer in there, The picture below is of the studio and we though that there was enough space. The picture doesn't represent all of the space available.
For the performance of the video we were told by Luke to draw on A3 sheet like you can see in the picture exactly where everything is going to be. In our case it is where the singer will be, where the drummer and the drum kit will be and where the pianist and the piano are going to be. We hadn't thought that through yet but i presumed it to be like a diamond formation where the leader will be at the top and the piano and drum kit in line with each other behind.

I think that we wouldn't need to have a narrative, this is because the song is so good that we can do so many interesting things on camera that we can make up enough time for the whole video. For example the dancing and the cool things done in reverse.

Saturday 3 October 2015

Looking at girlfriend and boy friend fighting in the car park

What we learnt from this is that we can get lots of really cool shots. This has encouraged us that the idea can be filmed very well. The pushing and the shoving looks visually appealing to the audience. If we are going to have a couple fighting then this is what we want it to look like.

Friday 2 October 2015

Final idea

This is our final idea and we are not gonna change it. The idea contains of three strands one being a lip sync where we will just have the main actor who is Freddie's brother singing into a microphone in a studio or either singing in the rain, this might be hard as the cameras could get damaged. Another strand is the main singer singing with like 4 girl dancers around him in the studio. The 3rd strand is cool things in reverse like what i have posted in the previous blog post. The main theme of the video will be that it is played backwards starting with a man rising up out of bed to him seeing a smashed room and we show how he smashed the room up in reverse with cuts from the lip sync and the dance along with other cool things done in reverse. The video ends with the main singer burning up a letter which will be reversed as well. The significance of the letter being burnt is because that letter is the reason why the man has ended up smashing up the room but we don't know what is in the letter.

Things that look good in reverse

Thursday 1 October 2015

Ideas for cool things to do in front of the carmera

We have decided that the third element to the video is to reverse stuff, we came up with an idea of pouring paint out in a mixture of different colours and reversing it, this will look very visually appealing. Another thing that looked cool when reversed is pouring some liquid into a glass, this is because when it is reversed the liquid in the bottle will gain more volume and the volume in the glass will get smaller.

Time Line and ideas for cool visual effects

These were the objectives of the lesson today

Time Line first draft by Alex

1 lead singer, 5 girl dancers. Dark Black/Blue background. Empty
The main singer start of singing on the ground  (laying flat). The the camera pans higher up  (revealing he singing form the ground)
Then it uses a reverse shot of the protagonist jumping up from the ground at 0.15
So the lead singer sings while 5 girls are dancing behind in like a wave (maybe reverse dancing?)
Then the singer moves away from the scene (walks to the left) while are still dancing (screen swipe to the left)
Then he is laying on the couch and there is a reverse sequence where the pong ball comes out of    the cup and into his hands. (Then make it float?)
(0.42 -  )It goes to the chorus “I just wanna get messed up”. Where we see a scene where we see two silhouettes on the left and right of him, while the protagonist was in the middle. (doing simple dances).
Then he moves out of the shot and he joins the dancers and dances (a bit). There will be close ups of the moves he performs. As he finishes the dance everyone moves away and the singer stays and they bring the microphone to him
Then the camera would flip around (making it looking like everything the wrong way around). Goes back to normal
Then there would be visual effects using a projector ( this would last 20 seconds )

Progress of Alex doing second draft

Examples of cool effects.

This isn't what we wanna try and do because we know it will be to hard but this is just an example of the kind of thing that makes a music video interesting.

Tuesday 29 September 2015

New idea

Due to the fact that we dont have much time left before we have to film we have decided to make a simple music video which is mainly about a performance with a simple song. There are going to be some different elements to the video to make things look interesting. One element will be singing, this will be a solo male who looks a bit like the photo beneath the text. The singer will have female dancers around him. This is apart of another element, dancing, this will be done by a few female dancers. Another element to the video will be some cool visual effects, we are going to try and make something similar to the gif below.

Talk from passion pictures

Ollie Allgrove  the executive producer of Passion Pictures came and spoke to us today on music videos and the different things he specialise in which include
Feature films, Music videos and commercials

The most i learnt from Ollie talking to us was about how to make a good music video doesn't depend on budget, it depends more on the idea and creativity, this is good for us because we don't have any budget.
He also told us that the best way to tell stories (music videos) is through animation, live action, design and visual effects. I thought this was very useful to us now that we have to come up with a completely new idea, because it means that we don't have to come up with a complicated narrative we can make the music video look good through the use of visual effects, but obviously have some narrative in there.

Monday 28 September 2015

Change in idea

In Fridays lesson we had a bit of a problem, it turns out that idea is just like a music video from imagine dragons, this is a problem as this is quite a well recognised music video as you can tell by the hits at the bottom right of the screenshot.
we are going to have to either change the idea of the music video completely or come up with ways of making the video seem different to the Imagine Dragons one.

Thursday 24 September 2015

Research into generic conventions

The Band that i have been told to look at by my group is Sunset Sons, this is an all male band which is what we are looking for as well, this is why this band means something to us.
This video has 3 main parts to it, a performance, which is the band playing in a set. A narrative of a girl which takes part in a few different locations and a lip sync.

The performance takes part in what looks like a studio, the lighting of the studio is very low apart from on the face of the lead singer.
lots of shots of the musical instruments.

The costume is simple t-shirts and hats

The camera work is all quite simple just close ups of the performance on either the faces of the band or the instruments.

The main singer has a beard and long hair.
The main singer is highlighted the most out of the band.

When it comes to the narrative it is quite different. The narrative is about a girl who seems to be angry about something.

The shots of the girl are mainly long shots to show her isolation.

Tuesday 22 September 2015

class review of potential ideas

These were the ideas that the class came up for what people could be doing at night, some of the ideas i quite like, for example the gambling, costume switch. Freddie also came up with a good idea which i think is my favourite. The idea is that there would be a man who lives on his own but he is very lonely to when it comes to dinner he has mannequins around the table like his pretend family.

Monday 21 September 2015

feedback from luke as a group

We found the feedback generally as a group a bit confusing, i understood it my self but some of my groups comments made things not as simple as i originally thought. Today when we were talking about the feed back as a group we got mixed up between our two ideas and i think i managed to sort it out and managed to keep things under control and then as a group we spoke about what we were going to do individually to help move the process along further, i was told to focus on who will be  the main character ( what he/she looks like ), where they will be and what they will be doing.

I found something similar to the location that we want for the lead singer to be walking down the street. I looked at Sam Smith- Stay with me and thought if we copied that opening bit of the video it would look cool.

There are lots of places round school with street like that. Cranleigh which is only 10 minutes away and Guildford which is 20 minutes away would both work

The main narrative in a simple one and is about this man walking down a street and some how gets to see what people do at night, we haven't come up how he gets to see this but he does.
The actor is just going to be a young male, this will be easy as we are school with a group of students aged 16 to 19.

feedback from Luke

Today (Thursday), we pitched our idea to Luke. Luke seemed to like our idea and thought that it could work well. The only criticism that he had was that the ideas that we had for people doing weird stuff at night was a bit extreme and instead it should be more of a contrast of what people would expect those people to be doing. For example a grandma at a club or a baby at a dinner party. Im going to think about some ideas that we could use over the weekend in preparation for the final idea of the video.

Expanding idea

Today ( Tuesday )in our media lesson our group spoke to Phil our teacher about our idea, Phil basically told us that he liked the idea but he thought that we would struggle with finding a warehouse and if we did try and make one in the studio or use a room from around school it wouldn't look great. He also said that the video might be a bit boring if we just have weird people with masks on dancing around that cuts between a performance, where a band is playing.
We took this feedback into consideration and put the idea behind us we said that we would try and come up with another one and see if it was any better.

So all through the lesson we were throwing out ideas for the video and couldn't really get one that we all agreed on. We ended the lesson with one potential idea about the masks and the warehouse.

Today ( Wednesday ) we came up with a new idea that we all liked. The idea was based on the main lyrics of this song which said 'what do we do when the power turns off''. The video basically is about the main singer of the band walking down the street, like a high street and he bumps into people and who ever he bumps into we get a cut from him bumping into someone which then cuts to the person he bumps into doing something weird at night. For example mugging someone.
